Students from Early years right through to Exits have the opportunity to take part in cooking sessions in the SEEDS café as part of the Kitchen Program. During these sessions in the kitchen, students follow recipes to prepare simple dishes to share with their class. Students are exposed to a range of different ingredients that they can touch, smell and taste. They get to learn lots of new skills by working together to follow a recipe and by using a wide range of kitchen equipment. The focus main focus is on safety and preparing simple meals that the students may be able to make at home for themselves or their family.
Some of the older students have the opportunity to suggest recipes for dishes that they would like to prepare during the term. Students usually attend a session once per week for at least 1 term each year.
The SEEDS café kitchen space is large with high ceilings and is filled with natural light which makes it a lovely environment for the students to work in. The space is also used for café sessions on Friday’s and other special events throughout the school year. During book week each year, the café is used to host the ‘Book Café’ sessions where students read books to each other and enjoy a special treat.
GIFT – food experience plates program – during GIFT sessions on Mondays, some classes participate in the ‘Food experience plate’ program where the learn safe knife handling and food preparation skills. Students learn about different fruits and vegetables and how to prepare them. The plates are prepared and delivered to class rooms for students to share and enjoy.
